Nifty Tips to Navigating the Holidays
November is here, and that means the holiday season is just around the corner! Get ready for a whirlwind of festivities filled with family, friends, and of course, delicious food. But if you're feeling a bit apprehensive because you've just started or recently recommitted to your health and fitness journey, don't worry, I've got you covered!
First and foremost, let's shift our mindset. A sustainable approach to health and fitness is all about balance and adding to your life, not restriction. So let go of that "all or nothing" mentality that often plagues us on our fitness journeys. A few indulgent days of eating or missed workouts won't derail your progress. After all, you didn't achieve your goals in a day, so you won't lose them in a day either!
Now, let me share some strategies that I suggest to my clients and follow myself during the holiday season. When it comes to food, start your day with a nourishing breakfast that includes a good balance of protein, carbs, and healthy fats. This will set you up for success and help you make mindful choices throughout the day. During the holiday meal, indulge in a little bit of everything you love. Remember, you can always go back for seconds! The same goes for desserts. Don't stress yourself out over food choices. If you're tracking macros and it's causing you anxiety, consider taking an untracked meal or even a day off. One day off track won't undo all your progress. Consistency over time is what truly matters.
As for workouts and movement, it's up to you and your preferences. If you're a runner like me, try squeezing in a quick run before heading out to see family. If a holiday falls on a day dedicated to strength training, simply rearrange your schedule to fit in your workout on another day since the gym may be closed.
Remember, you don't have to work out if you can't or don't want to. But if you do want to, that's perfectly fine too! If you're traveling and don't have access to your usual equipment, there are plenty of bodyweight exercises or resistance bands workouts that can still give you a great workout.
Another fantastic way to incorporate movement into your day is by going for a walk after a big meal. It helps with digestion and allows you to enjoy some fresh air. Plus, it's a great activity for the whole family to join in!
In the end, remember these three things: take a deep breath, a few off days won't derail your progress, and most importantly, enjoy the holiday season to the fullest!
I hope these tips help you navigate the holidays with confidence and joy!
